Goals ~
The goals of the Institute are:
To provide the best ophthalmic care to the community in a warm and caring way.
To educate the community about the importance of regular eye care.
To provide stable employment and training for members of the community.
Staff ~
The Institute employs about thirty full and part time staff dedicated to your eye
health, vision clarity, and facial enhancement. Almarie Hivale, RN, ABOC is the Administrator.
Staff Development ~
To encourage and continue its growth in excellence, Eye Life Institute conducts education classes and
ophthalmic training on all technical levels for its employees and other medical staff on a regular
basis. Dr. Niswonger, Dr. McPherran, and staff members regularly attend national and international
educational conferences and share their new knowledge with the staff and patients.
History ~ Eye Life Institute was founded by
Dr. Jerome Niswonger in 1988. His goal was to expand his
then ophthalmology practice by establishing an outpatient cataract and laser surgery center where the
latest technology could be brought to the patient in a safe comfortable and convenient environment.
He also wished to offer his patients expertise and selection in the optical field.
In 1989 a satellite office was opened in Oroville which grew and was well received. This was sold
in 1999 to Dr. John Johansson.
The Chico satellite office was opened in 1993 when Dr. Don Hardt, an optometrist, joined the staff.
In February 1998 this office was relocated to the convenient corner of Skyway and Notre Dame Blvd.
It had a well stocked Optical Department. Eye Life Institute was sorry to lose Dr. Hardt in
November 2000 when he decided to serve in the mission field of Saipan. In 2004 the Office and Optical Shop
were moved to the lovely new complex at 111 Raley Blvd, just a block away. This new office provided
room for our Skin Renewal Center.
The practice welcomed Randall R. McPherran, OD, FAAO in August 2001.
He brings much experience and expertise in his profession of Optometry.
The Skin Renewal Center was added in 2003. Not only can we help you
see your best but we can now help you look your best. We offer the newest and best technologies in
skin and facial enhancement services including eyelid lifts and other facial surgeries.
Dr. Boutros first came to Eye Life Institute in February 2006.
His 20 years of experience in ophthalmology practice, his international training and Fellowship in
retinal diseases and surgery continues to provide our patients with excellent care.
Since Eye Life Institute's beginning, Dr. Niswonger has performed over 5000
cataract surgeries and thousands of other eye surgeries. He and his staff have helped many thousands of patients in the Paradise/Chico/Oroville area to
achieve the clearest vision possible. Dr. Boutros continues the tradition of excellent service and outcomes.
